THE FLOCKING OF SABAHAN STUDENT TO WEST MALAYSIA PTPTN

THE FLOCKING OF SABAHAN STUDENTS TO WEST MALAYSIA
UNDER PTPTN

Students all over the world come to especially Kuala
Lumpur to study in Malaysia's colleges / universities
and the courses offered by our Malaysian colleges are
very wide.
As we all know its important for our youth to obtain
at least a diploma to secure them a job. Parents are
very hopeful for their children to further study and
to graduate.

Lately, there have been Sabahan students mostly girls
flocking to West Malaysia mainly Klang Valley in big
numbers to do their nursing course. It is definitely
a very unusual sight in private colleges in Klang
Valley to see about 90% of the students are Sabahans.

This recent year, there are colleges here in West
Malaysia advertising for courses made available with
loan under PTPTN in East Malaysia. The intakes are 99%
East Malaysians students mostly Sabahans girls. The
courses are health related and the highest intake is
for Nursing course.

Recently we received lots of complaints from students.
500 students for every Nursing course intake and 4
intakes in a year. All promised by agents that the
potential students will get loans from PTPTN. We were
advised that there are more than 2000 students from
Sabah since year 2005 under PTPTN undergoing a 3 -year
course in Nursing & other health related courses. The
students were informed in Sabah that the loans were
RM34,000.00 to RM49,000.00 depending on the colleges
and courses taken.
We are only aware of 3 private colleges offering
these courses. So far the students from 2 of these
colleges felt that the colleges did not fulfill the
promises given to them.
When these students arrived in Kuala Lumpur, the
receiving parties informed them verbally that their
loans for these courses are actually RM54,000.00 to
RM60,000.00 and repayments to be made within 10 years
after completion of the courses.

Sadly, most of these students came from the rural
areas of Sabah . Lack of information and knowledge
with the need to study in colleges especially here in
Kuala Lumpur,
drove them to the unexpected. Before these students
came here, they were to pay RM500.00 to RM2000.00
deposits. Some deposits were refundable upon approvals
of their PTPTN loans.

This is one of their complains and is the major issue.
These students came here with pocket money just enough
for a few days thinking that they will get their
loans immediately. Some are left with no money at
all. Some panicked and lost of ideas how to survive at
least 3 months without pocket money while pending
PTPTN loan approval.

Promises by the colleges/agents

1. PTPTN loan
2. A beautiful apartment with swimming pool and all
provided for by the college.
3. All paid for accommodations and transportation
4. Availability of jobs overseas and locally once
graduated
5. Pocket money every month
6. Qualified tutors/trainers/lecturers
7. Courses are approved by LAN.

In actual

1. PTPTN loan is not free – students will have to
repay within 10 years once they graduate either they
can get a job or not.
2. Some apartments are in sorry condition. No guards
or proper fencing. Available for anyone to enter. No
security. Swimming pool is not at all in sight.
3. Apartment – college charge the students RM120.00 to
RM250.00 monthly and some have to pay their utility
bills on their own. 8 to 12 students per unit.
Some units do not allow cooking.
Transportation is only applicable to college and
return.
4. Jobs for nurses overseas are only for the most
qualified and experienced nurses and obviously those
with excellent English. Job availability locally is
unknown.
The future for the rest of the students taking other
courses is unknown..
5. Pocket money- sadly- is not enough. Students
receive between RM120.00 to RM300.00 and not every
month. The living expenses in KL is expensive. The
students will have to ask the college repeatedly
before they are given.
6. Lack of tutors/trainers/lecturers. Too many classes
and students. Qualified, that is unknown. Some
students attend 2 out of 5 days classes only due to
lack of tutors/lecturers.
7. The students found out some of the courses are yet
to be approved by LAN .

All the above are borne by the students through their
loans and not the colleges.
The college provide and students pay.

The teaching medium is in English which our Sabahans
students are lacking.

PRECAUTION

1. BE AWARE OF UNKNOWN COLLEGES.

2. COLLEGES BASED IN WEST MALAYSIA ADVERTISING THEIR
COURSES IN SABAH MUST BE THOROUGHLY CHECKED BEFORE
APPLYING.

3. STUDENTS MUST APPLY FOR ANY COURSES ON THEIR OWN
AND
NOT THROUGH AGENTS.

4. APPLY FOR COURSES APPROVED AND RECOGNISED BY THE
MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT .
5. DO NOT TAKE THE COLLEGES WORD FOR WORD. Read the
fine lines on the advertisements.

6. FOR PARENTS – DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO FREELY
DECIDE ON ANY COURSES UNDER PTPTN LOAN.-If the
students are unable to make the repayments , the
parents will be the ones making the repayments.

7. FOR PARENTS - BE AWARE OF YOUR CHILDREN ACTIVITIES
WHEN THEY ARE STUDYING IN WEST MALAYSIA.

8. BE VERY VERY PREPARED BEFORE COMING TO WEST
MALAYSIA TO STUDY, FINANCIALLY AND MORALLY.

9. DO NOT SIMPLY TRUST ANYONE WITH HEAVENLY
PROMISES– Sabahans are very trusting and friendly. Its
fine if you are at home but not elsewhere if you do
not know anyone.

10. IF YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN OR ANY OTHER RELIGIONS ,
PLEASE FIND OUT THE CONTACT PERSON IN KUALA LUMPUR OR
THE NEAREST PLACE OF WORSHIP TO YOU. –

Dear friends,

We are very concerned about the new arrival of
students here which require immediate attention from
Sabahans residing in KL.

We need your help to spread this sharing. Many
students are from family with lesser income. We wish
to see our Sabahan youths succeed and not exploited or
burdened by study loans. We also hope that these
students genuinely leave their nests to better their
lives by getting good education and not to just to get
out of their homes in exchange for freedom. Wherever
we go, we need to struggle to survive . Remind our
youths that they cannot lag in the city or they will
be left behind.
We have to compete with Malays, Chinese, Indians,
Eurasian and others foreigners here in West Malaysia.
We are the minority unlike in Sabah.

Our other concerns include:

1. The possibilities that our Sabahan girls are
involved in vice due to culture shock
and financial problems.

2. The Sabahans who can't speak English are treated
like the Indonesians , Bangladeshi etc. which is very
demeaning.

3. Sabahans from rural areas who respond to job
advertisements come to KL to only find out that they
are being cheated after a few days.

4. Most of the jobs offered are contracts with no EPF
and Socso. They are paid daily.. Some are locked with
their i/c withheld by the employers.

5. Our Sabahan youths are caught doing criminal
activities including selling pirated VCDs and other
petty crimes.

6. Some are begging for money ,drug addicts or in
jail.

We are working with Catholic and other churches here
in West Malaysia to assist us to give guidance to the
new comers.
If any of your family members or friends wish to
come to KL for the first time to study or work and do
not know anyone here, please make the necessary
enquiries before leaving the comfort zone .

Please advise your family, neighbour and friends .

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
